Mosquito Detection For Improved Malaria Vector Modelling
نویسندگان
چکیده
The HumBug project is targeted at eliminating mosquito-borne diseases that have a major impact on human health, income and mortality [1]. The ultimate aim is to deploy a sensor network consisting of portable devices, such as mobile phones, wristbands or other monitoring devices. The devices may communicate in either a centralised or decentralised fashion to help target areas in need of aid optimally. The detection is critical to the success of the overall project in both configurations. This paper presents a simple, robust and highly computationally efficient wavelet-based algorithm. Classifier performance is demonstrated in demanding scenarios, showing equal or better detection performance at greatly reduced computational complexity compared to HumBug’s current detector. The improved efficiency particularly suits power needs of low cost devices and ensures sensor network policies can be utilised to their maximum potential.

Modelling the Spatial Distribution of the Anopheles Mosquito for Malaria Risk Zoning Using Remote Sensing and GIS: A Case Study in the Zambezi Basin, Zimbabwe
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System was used to develop a spatial risk malaria distribution model based on environmental suitability for survival of the Anopheles gambie sp. Complex (A. arabiensis and A. gambae), the vector known to transmit malaria in Zimbabwe (Masendu, 1996). Employing geostatistical techniques, spatial analysis of environmental factors that contribute to the spr...
متن کاملAn Integrated Bayesian Modelling Approach for Predicting Mosquito Larval Habitats
Malaria is the leading cause of death in Kenya highlands. Malaria is a vector-borne disease and mosquito is the vector that transmits the parasites from infected people to others. Controlling mosquito larval habitats is important in eradicating malaria. Modeling the spatially distributed mosquito larval habitats is challenging. This study explores a mosquito habitat modeling approach, which int...
متن کاملNon-Genetic Determinants of Mosquito Competence for Malaria Parasites
Understanding how mosquito vectors and malaria parasites interact is of fundamental interest, and it also offers novel perspectives for disease control. Both the genetic and environmental contexts are known to affect the ability of mosquitoes to support malaria development and transmission, i.e., vector competence. Although the role of environment has long been recognized, much work has focused...
متن کاملRemote Sensing: a Visionary Tool in Malaria Epidemiology
Malaria is still a major public health problem. In India nearly 2-3 million cases occur every year with about 1000 deaths. Control of malaria requires case detection and treatment of affected individuals, and for curtailment of malaria transmission, control of mosquito vectors is undertaken. Vector control requires knowledge of the ecology of breeding and resting habitats and behaviour of vario...
متن کاملModelling Anopheles gambiae s.s. Population Dynamics with Temperature- and Age-Dependent Survival
Climate change and global warming are emerging as important threats to human health, particularly through the potential increase in vector- and water-borne diseases. Environmental variables are known to affect substantially the population dynamics and abundance of the poikilothermic vectors of disease, but the exact extent of this sensitivity is not well established. Focusing on malaria and its...
